The three stone ring carries the oldest symbolism in engagement jewellery: one stone for your past, one for your present, one for your future. Beyond the meaning, it is simply one of the most generous looks a ring can have, spreading light across the finger in a way no single stone can, which is why the style keeps returning to favour decade after decade.
A fine three stone ring is an exercise in proportion. The side stones should frame the centre without competing with it; most of our commissions sit around half the centre stone weight per side. The classic pairing is three matched shapes, like the Adelle with its trio of rounds, but some of the most striking rings we make mix cuts: an oval centre between pear sides, or an emerald cut flanked by tapered baguettes. Every combination is hand-set at the bench so the three stones sit in one clean, continuous line.

What size should the side stones be in a three stone ring?
Most of our commissions sit around half the centre stone weight per side, which frames the centre without competing with it. Larger sides make the ring read bolder and more vintage; smaller sides keep the centre unmistakably the hero.
Do the side stones have to match the centre shape?
Not at all. Matched trios are the classic, but mixed cuts, an oval between pears or an emerald cut between tapered baguettes, are among the most striking rings we make. We will sketch both directions in your consultation.
